Larry is a Fourth Generation Kansan, dating back to when Mose Powell purchased land in Kalvesta (located in north east Finney County) in 1887. He was born on the family farm. He graduated from Cimarron High School and went on to further his education at Garden City Community College, and then on to Kansas State University.
He was a custom harvester for several years and started cutting in Altus, Oklahoma in May and ending the harvest season in North Dakota, in late September.
In July of 1968 Larry married Myrna Helle in Watford City, North Dakota. Larry and Myrna have one son, Kent. He was born in 1972. He now owns and operates the family farm.
They were partners in Kalvesta Implement Company for several years. They later sold our intrest in the Implement Company and bought a farm of their own. It adjoined his folks’ farm. They made many improvements to the place and soon established Powell Angus Ranch Inc. They raised both registered and commercial angus cattle. At first they soldtheir registered cattle by private treaty, but later became Co-founders of Mid-Kansas Angus Breeders. This sale is held annually in La Crosse, Kansas.
In 2000 Larry was elected to the House of Representatives. Kent and his wife, Linda, took over the management of the Ranch and are now owners of the cattle division of the ranch, featuring the only straight Carlton Corbin Emulous Bloodline cattle available. They have three children Jayelynn, 10, Garrison, 7, and Trace 6.
Larry now enjoys watching his grandchildren, whether it is watching them sing or act in plays at school, or showing livestock at the county fair, one thing is for sure, Larry is always proud of their accomplishments.
Paid for by Powell for Senate, Wayne Barngrover Treasurer.
